Johann Baptist Strauss (also Johann Strauss; born March 14, 1804 in Leopoldstadt, now Vienna; † September 25, 1849 in Vienna) was an Austrian composer and conductor. During his lifetime, contemporaries dubbed him the “Waltz King”; This title passed to his son after his early death in the 1860s and was forgotten by him.
In order to avoid confusion with his son of the same name, he is often called Johann Strauss (father) ((or incorrectly Johann Strauss father (the distinctive suffix "father" is not part of the name), in the English-speaking area also Johann Strauss I)). His best-known work to date is the Radetzky March (op. 228), premiered in 1848, with which, in an arrangement by Leopold Weninger, the Vienna Philharmonic's New Year's Concert traditionally closes.
