Burke tried to shout—one of the first things that are recommended to do when meeting a bear is make loud noises—but the grizzly paid him absolutely no attention. Fearless, the mother bear closed the distance between them. The 35 year old had no way to go. He quickly assessed the situation: in front of him there was a mad bear ready to attack, at his right and left were miles upon miles of foliage and rocks that he could very well stumble upon, and behind him there was a valley that he could maybe roll off of. In absolutely any situation, the bear could run after him, catch him, and then eat him alive. And he didn’t even manage to take that picture of the Great Grey Owl. “What a waste”, he thought.
