Railroad Colony (Željeznička kolonija) is a planned residential district, almost a 100 years old, located in a larger Zagreb's borough called Maksimir. This cozy little neighborhood, placed right between the biggest city park Maksimir and the railroad, was built from 1927 to 1928, mostly to house railroad workers and their families. It managed to stay unchanged throughout the years, so today it looks the same as it did a 100 years ago. The only changes are newer buildings which were erected in place of buildings destroyed in 1944 bombing of Zagreb. The neighborhood consists of rows of smaller family houses with front and back yards, two squares and a church in the center. It is a distinct settlement of its own, tucked away from the main transit lines and somewhat hidden away from sight, so even many residents of Zagreb are not quite aware of its existence. As many other workers' quarters in Zagreb, Railroad colony is a child of intense period of industrialization in Zagreb between 1925 and 1940. Until 1st world war Zagreb was mostly a city of clerks, craftsmen and tradesmen with a population of 80 000 people. With the expansion of industry between world wars, the population of Zagreb increased by 150% and the construction of new districts and affordable homes for the working class followed this increasing trend. As a result, Zagreb has many pre-planned residential complexes, built between world wars, which remain quite intact to this day and are worthy of preservation as a cultural and historical legacy. Thankfully, many of them are indeed protected as a historical and cultural whole. Railroad colony is one of them. :)
