When you first join The Companions you are first given the quest, "Training with Vilkas". It is only you hitting Vilkas a few times with your weapon to test your mettle. However, my follower Faendal turns hostile to The Companions and gets me killed.

The workaround here for me is to ensure that Faendal does not hit Vilkas during the quest and distracts the other Companions from killing me outright. Then 'yielding'. I had to 'yield' twice in order for this to work.

Another more boring method is to ask Faendal to wait inside. It depends on the placement of each Companion in relation to you outside. The further away they are from you and closer to your follower, the less they focus on you and the less dead you will become...
