Welcome to Carlos Creek Winery, an award-winning winery at Bold North Cellars in Alexandria, Minnesota, where the journey from vine to wine is a testament to the artistry and dedication of our team.
Here at Carlos Creek Winery, every bottle of wine is a labor of love, crafted in our Production Building using the finest grapes harvested from our own vineyards and select vineyards across Minnesota.
The journey begins in late winter or early spring when our team works tirelessly to prune back the vines, a process that takes about a month to complete.
First, pruning helps control growth by removing older canes that would otherwise rob energy from the fruit-bearing canes. Second, it allows us to control crop load, ensuring that each grapevine produces a manageable number of clusters for optimal grape quality.
Our vineyard team will continue pruning throughout the growing season. Pruning helps control disease by maintaining an open canopy that allows sunlight and airflow to reach the grapes. This reduces the risk of fungal diseases and ensures that the grapes mature with higher sugar content and fewer herbaceous flavors.
Harvest season typically is from late August through early October. Each variety ripens at a different rate, giving us time to harvest at the peak of perfection for each individual grape. We have a harvesting machine that we have lovingly named “Greg.” He is a valued member of the harvest team. From harvest, our grapes will then be crushed, pressed and fermented all on-site .
At Carlos Creek Winery, we specialize in cold-hardy grape varieties such as Valiant, Frontenac, Frontenac Gris, Crimson Pearl, and King of the North. These varieties thrive in our Minnesota climate, producing grapes of exceptional quality.
Cheers to the art of viticulture and the remarkable wines that it produces.
