Lt. Col. John T. Nelson was a fighter pilot who served in the US Army Air Force during World War II. During the war, he flew P-40 Warhawk, British Spitfire, and P-51 Mustang fighters. Lt. Col. Nelson flew missions in the Mediterranean Theater and was credited with the downing of 3 German Messerschmidt Bf-109 fighters. In this clip, he recalls providing fighter cover while stationed on the Anzio beachhead in 1944. He describes the active battlefield and narrowly surviving the German defensive fire.
