The fall of Rome wasn't as clean cut as it is often made out to be; in reality there were a number of successors who either directly attempted to keep the empire alive, or sought to continue the use of the Roman title despite ushering in an entirely new order and culture, that's not even mentioning the very clear successor state of Byzantium, or the East Roman Empire as it is often known. Today we take a look at a few examples of potential Roman successor states, and how they might have developed had they managed to survive.
