The WDP3A, originally WDP-2, is a diesel electric locomotive designed and manufactured by the Diesel Locomotive works (DLW) Varanasi. The loco was specifically designed for high speed passenger traffic. The WDP3A was envisaged after its predecessor, the WDP-1, did not meet desired expectations and suffered from poor performance and maintenance issues. WDP3A is a thorough bred ALCO (American Locomotive Company) and is mechanically similar to the WDM3A and WDG3A locomotives. It is a handsome locomotive and the only ALCO locomotive from DLW with driver cabs at both ends. Around 69 units were produced before the loco gave way to the technologically more advanced WDP4 series from EMD.
