On Tuesday, July 23, 2024, at 4:17 PM, the Grayslake-Hainesville Police Department, Metra Police Department, and Grayslake Fire Protection District responded to a report of a car that crashed into a Metra train at the railroad crossing on IL-83 south of IL-137 in Grayslake, IL.
A Honda Civic sedan reportedly crashed into the side of the third train car while the train was proceeding at the rail crossing, according to Metra Police radio traffic.
The train involved was Metra Train 2121 traveling outbound on the Milwaukee District North (MD-N) line.
Train 2121 continued traveling outbound towards Fox Lake Metra station after the collision.
The driver of the Honda was reportedly able to get out of the car and had injuries to their head and arm, according to fire radio traffic.
Grayslake-Hainesville police officers and Grayslake firefighter/paramedics arrived to find the Honda with front-end damage and the rail crossing gate with damage.
The driver was transported to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville, IL with reported non-life-threatening injuries.
No one on the Metra train was injured, according to Metra Police radio traffic.
Two Metra police officers later arrived on the scene to conduct a crash investigation, including using a drone.
A tow truck from Dave's Transmissions, based out of the Round Lake area, later towed the Honda away from the scene.
Metra crews stayed on the scene into the evening to assess the damage and repair the railroad crossing gate.
The incident caused traffic delays because the southbound lanes of IL-83 were shut down for several hours.
