When selecting cuticle nippers, you might get confused by the different terms used to describe their sizes. I've also been asked many times what the difference between the sizes listed are.
The differences can be minute, so we made this video to show you exactly what we mean, and to help you make the right choice.
Summary:
The jaw refers to the cutting blades or cutting edges of a cuticle nipper.
There are 3 common jaw sizes:
4mm jaw aka quarter jaw aka 1/4 jaw
5mm jaw aka half jaw aka 1/2 jaw
6mm jaw aka full jaw
Note that jaw lengths can vary by +/- 0.5mm because they are sharpened by hand.
Tips for protecting your cuticle nippers:
1. Always keep them capped when not in use. Do not hit, drop or modify them. Protect the tips carefully because they are delicate. Any damage to them will render the nippers unable to cut.
2. Keep them dry and oil the joints and jaws occasionally.
3. Take extra care to keep carbon steel nippers dry and oiled. If you have problems with rust, opt for the stainless steel nippers instead.
