The rising action is the bulk of a novel, and so a crucial part of a story's structure. Since it can take up as much as 90% of a story, it includes almost the entirety of the plot development and the strength of a novel hinges on it. You can learn about the rising action by studying different story structures, but you can also learn the building blocks and qualities of a strong rising action in order to write an effective plot even without following a structure like the Hero's Journey or Save the Cat.
