Every 4-5 years, the United Nations runs a process called the Universal Periodic Review, or UPR. It’s effectively a human rights report card that looks at what states have done to fulfil their human rights commitments, and what could be done better.
The UPR is a way of holding countries to account for their compliance with international human rights laws and standards.
This process is one of the key opportunities for civil society organisations in Scotland to communicate human rights issues directly to the United Nations Human Rights Council.
The next review of the United Kingdom is due to take place in November 2022.
