Whose voice is it? In a recent symposium, there was robust debate about who should be telling stories of African animals. Who do they belong to and why do we think they belong to the global community. As I listened, I put myself in as many different perspectives as I could and then finally settled on one truth. No one owns them.
Wildlife and Nature can never be owned and once we get past this perception, perhaps we find a place for them that is theirs, that belongs to them, a place for their voices to sing and call and be heard. All we have to do is protect them against…ourselves. The rest, the ups and downs of their own survival is all up to them. The best we can do is get out of their way.
This week includes World Animal Day, and our ambition at Great Plains is be witness to what they do without interference, to rectify and repair that fabric when it is torn, and restore it and rewild it, and then to make every day their day because without them the roars will be silent, the rumbles quiet, the song long gone not just in their lives but in ours.
