STORYLINE
Leaders and top officials from the European Union (EU) and Latin American-Caribbean countries began their fifth annual summit on Friday, which is expected to focus on reducing poverty and slowing global warming.
At least 43 leaders from the European Union, Latin America and Caribbean will discuss poverty and climate change at the fifth summit in 10 years.
Security was tight in Lima on Friday, where about 50-thousand police were expected to be on hand.
Peruvian President Alan Garcia welcomed various guests at the entrance of the summit building.
Meanwhile, around 200 non-governmental organisations on Tuesday started an alternative summit, dubbed the "Summit of the People" in Lima.
Social, labour and indigenous groups from both continents have convoked the alternative summit to oppose trade deals, as well as privatisation and pollution, according to organisers.
Some Latin American foreign ministers attending the official summit, are also expected to speak at the alternative summit.
During the official summit the commission is expected to announce the creation of a program called EuroClima, with initial financing of 7.7 (m) million US dollars, to fund projects in Latin America to stem climate change.
