Itanagar, Naharlagun and Dehradun have seen widespread protest and arson on the issue of extending Permanent Resident Certificate (PRC) to non Arunachal Pradesh Scheduled Tribes. The house of ex-CM Chowna Mein was burnt down. The state government has put aside the decision to issue certificates for now.
The 48hour bandh called against PRC To Non- APST crippled normal life in various part of the state. The Bandh was called by various organization like Arunachal Law Students Union, All Papumpare District Students Union (APPDSU), Nyishi Ethnic Students Association (NESA) in Capital region and in district like All Namsai District Students Union (ANDSU) , All Tai Khampti Singpho Students Union (ATKSSU) , All Changlang District Students Union (ACDSU) , All Tangsa Students Union (ACDSU) And Others In Namsai and Changlang alonsg.
Agitating students are demanding rollback of joint high power committee report submitted to cabinet regarding PRC TO NON APST.
‘No major law & order situation was reported from Capital region, however atleast 27 agitators were arrested till evening, 17 from Itanagar, 2 from Naharlagun and 8 from Nirjuli ‘informed Superintendent of Police , M Harsha Vardhan .
Meanwhile, Chairman JHPC, and Minister Nabam Rebia stated that ‘ Without knowing the ground reality and going through the JHPC Report calling bandh is political move and to gain publicity ‘ . ‘Prior to this committee, there was two committee one led by former Chief Minister Late Jarbom Gamlin, and another led by former MP Takam Sanjoy who recommended to grant PRC to the people living in those region, however there is nothing new in my case also, added REbia while informing that after rounds of meeting with effected and victim peoples we have made the report. He also categorically clarified that the report was not his personal decision but a accumulation of the views and decision of all the members.
‘This is the issue of Human Rights, how can we deny them their basic rights who are staying there since time immemorial. PRC doesn’t confer APST status nor they can buy land in the area, all such condition is already provided in the JHPC report.
