This is a beautiful 6x14 Craviotto snare. This series was designed as a "Tribute" to Johnny after his passing in July 2016. The drum embodies elements of what inspired Johnny throughout his career. Only 25 drums were made worldwide.
First, the shell is maple, which was always Johnny's favorite wood, and it is finished in gloss lacquer. The 6x14 size is a blend between the 5.5x14 and 6.5x14 sizes Johnny typically made and it is a nice, full bodied sound with lots of presence and sensitivity as you would expect from Johnny's world class shell bending procedures. The drum has 8 lugs and 30 degree edges for a vintage feel that also inspired Johnny. The strainer is a vintage-style classic 3 point as seen on so many of the drums of the 20s through 50s and the hoops are chrome over brass, which also helped define the vintage sound that inspired Johnny. Also, the inlay is pure Abalone which is a fitting tribute to Johnny's love of the sea. And lastly, the interior of the drum has an exact reproduction of the paper tag that Johnny used in his early days of repairing and customizing drums. All-in-all a fitting tribute to the Master.
