Enna, central Sicily. Already for the Romans "navel of Sicily", impregnable due to its strategic position in the center of the island, it is an unmissable treasure chest. Its ancient nucleus, Enna Alta, is of astonishing elegance and offers breathtaking views of the interior of Sicily. Its history, three thousand years old, is evident in the fortresses, fortifications, noble palaces and in the myriad of churches scattered through the streets of the city.
Enna stands on a hill over 900 meters above sea level. Already at the time of the Sicans, the ancestral inhabitants of western Sicily, it was considered an ideal fortress so much so that the Castle of Lombardy, one of the main attractions, stands on the ruins of a Sican stronghold. For the Romans the city had a key role in controlling the territory. Marcus Tullius Cicero even resided there. The very name of the city, Enna or Henna, exudes history. When the Arabs took it over, after a long siege resolved only by betrayal, they renamed it “Quasr Yani” (Enna fortress). After the reconquest, the Normans Latinized the name into Castrum Ioannes which, with subsequent linguistic deformations, led to the toponym Castrogiovanni, in use until 1927, when the fascist regime restored the ancient name of Enna.
A visit to the city would be worth at least a couple of days. In this short video I show you the most classic route, the one that winds along Via Roma and touches some of the most significant places, the shrine of the War Dead in the church of Santa Chiara, the Government Palace, Piazza Colajanni, the magnificent cathedral of Enna, finishing at Lombardy Castle, which actually requires a separate visit and will be the subject of a future video. Naturally Enna Alta offers much more and for this reason I recommend you stay at least one night. You will thus be able to take advantage, weather permitting, of the spectacular 360 degree view of Sicily, offered by the numerous city viewpoints. I'm sure you won't regret it.
