Introduced by Ned Dwyer, Matt Gummery is a Product Manager at Global Fishing Watch. He previously led Policy Development for the Marine Stewardship Council and has worked on many projects to incentivize fisheries to adopt signs and management best practices as well as minimize ecosystem impacts. Global Fishing Watch is an international NGO that uses satellite technology, machine learning, and data visualization to understand human activity at sea through free and open data. Their work supports greater transparency, scientific research, sustainable use of our oceans, and reduction of Illegal, Unregulated and Unreported (IUU) fishing. Global Fishing Watch is currently working on a marine manager portal to provide interactive data for the public. A demonstration of the marine manager portal featured a time interactive map showing activities occurring during different time periods. This feature allows people in remote places to understand what is going on in places of interest, such as fishing hot spots. Different types of data can be added to the marine manager portal including tracking data and polygons. All activity data can be accessed and imported straight into a user’s system to be used and combined in any way. A key focus of this platform is collaboration and data sharing.
