A very special shopping culture in Japan every new year's is the buying of fukubukuro or (literally) "lucky bag" in English. Although, some stores call them "happy bags".

Each bag has a set price, but the items inside costs more than 50% of what you paid for. The catch is that you don't know what you'll get until you buy and open the bag. No returns, no exchange, too.

In past years, you can only buy the bag at physical stores. You have to get to the stores as early as you can because the lines get really long, and the bags sell out at lightning speed.

But now, you can do online reservations as well as in-store reservations. If you do in-store reservations, pick-ups start from December 26th. Online reservations are sent on the same day and you receive the items on the 27th of December.

I bought all SEVEN Sanrio lucky bags also known as fukubukuro. Which one is your favorite? This year's new character bag is the Little Twin Stars. I thought their mascot was so cute. I'm very pleased with this haul. Although, I am wondering what am I going to do with 7 towels? Have you got any suggestions? hehehehe

This year's Fukubukuro is worth 4990yen (roughly US$32 because of the weak yen). But as you can see from the video, the items inside each bag is worth almost 3 times more than what you paid for. There are 10 items in each bag.
