Alan Wake 2 is a survival horror video game crafted and developed by Remedy Entertainment and published by Epic Games Publishing in 2023. Serving as a sequel to the original Alan Wake, the narrative centers around the renowned horror novelist Alan Wake. Trapped in a dark alternate dimension for 13 years, Wake desperately endeavors to break free by weaving a chilling tale featuring an FBI special agent named Saga Anderson. The game hit the shelves for PlayStation 5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X/S on October 27, 2023, and garnered widespread critical acclaim for its immersive experience and storytelling prowess.
Players play as either writer Alan Wake or Agent Saga Anderson in two separate single-player stories, which can be played in any order the player chooses; although the opening sequence and ending sequence of the game can only be played as Saga and as Alan, respectively. Wake and Anderson traverse environments and fight enemies using various firearms and a flashlight.
Alan Wake 2 incorporates some detective elements: when playing as Saga, players can always pause the gameplay to access an enemy-free space dubbed the "Mind Place". Described by Remedy as a "3D menu", the Mind Place is a visual representation of Saga's thoughts. In the Mind Place, players manage a pin board in which they can connect clues to piece together the main mystery, as well as profile characters to gather clues. A returning element from Alan Wake is manuscript pages: players find pages of a manuscript that foreshadow upcoming events in the story. Unlike the previous game, Alan Wake 2 features a dialogue tree system.
Critics generally praised Alan Wake 2 at launch, with the Xbox Series X version earning widespread acclaim, as indicated by the Metacritic review aggregator. The overall reception was characterized as "generally favorable."
In a review by Andrew Farrell from PCGamesN, Alan Wake 2 secured an impressive 9 out of 10 rating. Farrell described the game as a marvel, citing its intense gameplay, intricate and dark narrative, and an abundance of secrets and surprises. He commended Remedy for surpassing expectations and delivering an outstanding gaming experience. Alan Wake 2 is also nominated for 2023’s Game of the Year award, among many others.
