Martin James Bartlett performs 'I've Got Rhythm' by Gershwin live on BBC Radio 3. In May 2014, at the age of 17, Martin James Bartlett won the BBC Young Musician competition, following a performance of Rachmaninov’s Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra under Kirill Karabits. He began his piano studies with Emily Jeffrey at the Royal College of Music Junior Department at the age of 8, continuing at the Purcell School five years later. Last autumn he commenced his undergraduate studies with Vanessa Latarche at the Royal College of Music.
He won numerous prizes during his time at the RCM Junior Department, and for several years running he was a top prize-winner in the Jaques Samuel Junior Department Piano Festival. In 2012 he was granted a Tsukanov Scholarship, which supported his final years of study at the RCMJD. During his time at the Purcell School, he won the Freddy Morgan Competition, the Wigmore Competition and the Senior School Concerto Competition.
Martin James Bartlett has given solo recital performances in venues including the Purcell Room, Wigmore Hall, St John’s, Smith Square, Bolívar Hall and Novi Sad Town Hall. He has also participated in masterclasses with Lang Lang, Stephen Kovacevich, Mikhail Petukhov, Kathryn Stott, Aaron Shorr and Alberto Portugheis.
Recent engagements have included concerto performances with the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra and Ulster Orchestra (Proms in the Park), and at St John’s, Smith Square, Cadogan Hall and Queen Elizabeth Hall. In April he made his debut with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra at the Royal Albert Hall. In June he opened the Cheltenham Festival with the BBC Concert Orchestra.
