Zhanna Kadyrova, who was based in Kyiv before Russia’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine, escaped to the Transcarpathian region in the west of the country following the outbreak of war. On the outskirts of the village of Berezovo, she collected rocks carved round by the flow of the river. Noting the similarity to the shape of – a circular Ukrainian bread – in this installation she slices the rocks and places them on a table, which she sets as if for a meal or a gathering. While palianytsia represents Ukrainian hospitality, during the invasion the hearth-baked bread became a means of identifying aggressors. The loaf common to the region is pronounced very differently in Russian.
Thank you Galleria Continua for supporting this installation, currently installed at Aspinwall House, Fort Kochi, curated by Shubigi Rao.
