The current-generation Toyota Tacoma is slow, noisy, rough-riding, hard on gas, and ludicrously out-of-date. And buyers absolutely love it. People love it for its famous durability, trucky good looks, and go-anywhere chops. How does one update such a beloved model without alienating those who like it? Aside from some bolts and some buttons, the 2024 Tacoma is all new. But is it still the old truck we know and love?
It's almost expected that any new generation of truck today will be larger and heavier than the one it replaces. This is true for the Tacoma but not as much as you might think. The track width is 76 mm wider, the truck is 30 mm taller and the wheelbase has grown by 115 mm. That said, if you compare the outgoing V6 with the incoming turbo-four, the new one is just 30 kg heavier. This is especially impressive considering that the new truck boasts a more rigid fully-boxed frame. To achieve this, the new Tacoma features an aluminum hood, tailgate, and bedsides. Just like the outgoing generation, the bed itself is plastic resin.
