‘Shapeshifting Wizards' is the second album by Greek composer, oudist & multi-instrumentalist Thomas Meleteas. Comprised of 6 original compositions, it presents a contemporary vision for the music of Greece and the broader eastern Mediterranean region, filtered through the composer's and his fellow musicians' own experiences and aesthetics.
The albumʼs main source of conceptual inspiration comes from the
Mesoamerican shamanistic traditions and the Aztec folkloric myths, especially the concept of Nagualism, i.e. the belief that a certain human being - called nagual, has the ability to shapeshift into animal form. Every composition bestows an abstract description of the transformation from human to animal.
In terms of musical expression, a crucial part of the album is the natural flow from the traditional Mediterranean rhythmic and compositional forms and modal melodic mindset into an ever-changing canvas of playful rhythmic, melodic and harmonic experimentations.
