This lecture begins the study of Lewis's space trilogy. It is written against the backdrop of H.G. Wells' cosmic evolutionism, and it counters his reductionism at every point.
He 're-enchants' the cosmos and creates a different view of human nature and of biology for that matter, positing a devolutionary account of the created order, presenting the nature of the conflict not as one of progress, amenable to the aims of scientific conditioners, but rather of cleaving to the good and shunning evil. This is the worldview of what he calls the Tao, the backdrop for the ethical framework of the world's major religions.
