Even before talks were over, China's Vice Foreign Minister Xie Feng said the country's relationship with the U.S. is now in a "stalemate" and faces "serious difficulties."
The Chinese foreign ministry explained that this was due to some Americans treating China as an "imaginary enemy."
U.S. officials described their talks as "forthright and professional" and stressed that they do not seek conflict with China.
The second high-level meeting between U.S. and Chinese officials this year ended Monday without much diplomatic improvements.
The talks come more than three months after the two sides met in March... when they exchanged sharp rebukes at their meeting in Alaska.
