Communication - Not communicating as effectively or as thoroughly as possible. Communication is key to understanding what the customer wants and is willing to pay you. Also, remember the saying under promise, over deliver. Finally, don't go for perfection unless the customer is willing to pay for it.
Spot Test - If you don't do a test spot when correcting paint, you're setting yourself up for a lot more work, potential trouble, and mistakes. Do a spot test and pay close attention to how the paint reacts to the products you're using your method, and the machine and pad you're using. This will help give you the direction needed to correct the paint properly and efficiently.
Technology - As we know, technology is always changing. If you don't keep up with the latest machines, equipment, compounds, pads, etc. you could be missing out on things that could help you do your job more effectively and efficiently.
Technique & Skill - Sometimes we see where detailers have every new product that hits the market, but they don't fully develop their skill set or know all the nuances of each product they have. It's better to develop a solid understanding of just a few products that work and perform really well. Another suggestion is don't work too quickly or use overly aggressive products. Finally, clean your pads regularly, this will help ensure you get the best results.
Protect yourself - ear protection, gloves, eye protection, mask. Don't make the mistake that you don't need to protect yourself. It's a good idea to play it safe and protect yourself if you are exposed to products and chemicals day in and day out.
