(12 Jul 2016) The United Nations World Food Programme chief said on Tuesday Jordan has agreed to a "one-off" delivery by aid agencies of food to more than 60,000 Syrians stranded at the border between Jordan and Syria.
Aid to the refugees was stopped last month by the Jordanian government due to security concerns after the extremist group Islamic State detonated a car bomb near a Jordanian border post, killing seven soldiers and wounding 13 others in the deadliest attack in the Kingdom in years.
Ertharin Cousin, executive director of the United Nations World Food Program, said she met with Jordanian officials Tuesday and flew over the Ruqban border camp.
She said the UN agency is working with the international community, Jordan and Syria to develop new ways to deliver aid from inside Syria.
Water deliveries have been minimal since humanitarian deliveries were stopped, providing half of international standards of emergency relief.
