University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire Opera Workshop Performance, Fall 2020
Due to the continuing social distancing requirements, our normal focus on scene production had to be modified this year. Because text is the inspiration for any piece of vocal music, understanding and developing the language (whether native or foreign) is crucial to a meaningful performance, for both audience and performer. By taking the time to thoroughly study the construction and intent of an opera or musical theatre libretto, the students were better equipped to deliver performances that were motivated by the words, not merely by a desire to produce beautiful sounds. In fact, by understanding the text more deeply, the students' singing improved noticeably.
This video features performances each of our students self-produced and that, for the most part, feature pre-recorded accompaniment tracks. This aspect of the performing career was also discussed throughout the semester -- that of self-promotion, development of an aria or song "package" for auditions, and the creation and maintaining of a binder to be taken to and used by the on-duty pianist at auditions.
We hope you enjoy this performance, and thank you for continuing to support UWEC Opera and Musical Theatre!
