Speaker: Professor Dinusha Mendis, Bournemouth University
Abstract: This presentation will provide an overview of the commissioned project completed for the European Commission in April 2020. Combining an in-depth legal analysis with empirical data drawn from interviews with 40+ industry stakeholders, the talk will draw on the findings as well as setting out the conclusions and recommendations from seven sectors which were explored, as part of this project. Amongst them, the health sector was considered, and the presentation will further provide an insight into some of the findings to be considered during the current pandemic.
Biography: Dinusha Mendis is Professor of Intellectual Property & Innovation Law and Co-Director of the Jean Monet Centre of Excellence for European Intellectual Property and Information Rights. Her recent research and projects have included considering the challenges to Intellectual Property Rights as a result of new and emerging technologies, such as the Intellectual Property (IP) implications of 3D Printing, AI and blockchain. In 2015, she completed the first commissioned project on IP implications of 3D printing for the UK Intellectual Property Office which was followed by a funded project for the AHRC in 2017 focusing on 3D printing and scanning of ancient and modern jewellery. In 2018, she was commissioned by the European Commission to explore the IP implications of Industrial 3D Printing which was completed in April 2020. Her book titled ‘3D Printing and Beyond: Intellectual Property and Regulation’ co-edited with Professor Mark Lemley (Stanford, USA) and Professor Matthew Rimmer (QUT, Australia) was published by Edward Elgar in 2019. She is regularly invited to present her research nationally and internationally to academic institutions as well as policy makers and blue chip industry clients such as Virgin, BAE Systems, Jaguar Land Rover, BBC, Guardian and Chanel amongst others. She holds qualifications from the Universities of Aberdeen (LLB Hons), Edinburgh (LLM, PhD), Nottingham Trent University (BVC) and has been called to the Bar of England and Wales and is a member of the Honourable Society of the Middle Temple Inn.
