Hello everyone! About a month ago, my wife Yujin and I picked a random area in Korea to travel in our van, and we ended up picking the district of Buk-gu (북구) in Gwangju (광주). On December 3, South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol (윤석열) declared emergency martial law in Korea, which was the first time since martial law was declared in 1980 by Former President Chun Doo-hwan (전두환). At the time, Korea was a military dictatorship, and students at Gwangju’s Chonnam University (전남대학교) protested in hopes that Korea would become a democracy someday, and the Martial Law Forces (MLF) were sent to control the protests. However, it was one of the most brutal massacres in Korean history where almost 200 people were killed, including 166 citizens. We went to learn about what happened on May 18th, 1980, now known as the Gwangju Uprising (5.18 민주화운동) at the May 18th National Cemetary (국립5.18민주묘지), Gwangju Station (광주역), and Chonnam University (전남대학교), which all happened to be in Buk-gu that we picked randomly.
