Our Culture, Our Identity: Circumcision of Twins Among the Luhya Community.
The Bukusu traditional circumcision ceremony that takes place every even year, is the most attended event in Western Kenya’s rich cultural tourism experience.
Though most people get to experience, participate and lose themselves in the event, few get an opportunity to immerse in the vibrant event’s sensitivities; such as the interesting rites of ‘special’ type of basinde. i.e. (FISRT BORNS, TWINS, and CHILDREN OF CIRCUMCICERS)
Among the Bukusu, not all initiates, or basinde, who undergo the cut are equal.
Right from Bukusu customs on birth, naming and burial, twins are considered a special birth. Just like any other basinnde, twins undergo circumcision the normal way except for a few rituals that come with it.
It’s all starts with khuulanga. Here they inform friends and relatives of the big event ahead.
In cases where one of the twins is a girl, it gets interesting. The girl participates fully in every rite her brother is going through.
On this episode of our culture, our identity, we explore the circumcision of twins among the Abaluhya community.
