One of the last messages sent from the doomed Titan submersible during its fateful June 2023 voyage to the Titanic wreckage was a simple yet haunting: "All good here." But as we now tragically know, all was not well beneath the waves. According to a recent presentation from a U.S. Coast Guard hearing on the deadly implosion, this message marked one of the final communications before disaster struck.
The Marine Board of Investigation for the U.S. Coast Guard has commenced a two-week hearing into the incident, 15 months after the OceanGate vessel catastrophically imploded during its deep-sea voyage, claiming the lives of all five people aboard—including OceanGate CEO Stockton Rush.
An animation unveiled by the Coast Guard during the hearing showcased the chilling text communications between the Titan and its surface vessel, the Polar Prince, as the submersible made its descent on June 18, 2023. These short text messages were the only lifeline between the Titan crew and the personnel above. At approximately 2,274 meters deep, the reassuring message "All good here" was sent. But as the submersible plunged deeper, the final message received at around 3,341 meters was "Dropped two wts," indicating the release of drop weights—a possible sign of trouble.
Moments later, at 3,346 meters, all communications and tracking from the Titan ceased. Four days later, debris from the submersible was discovered on the ocean floor. The heartbreaking conclusion: all five crew members had perished in a catastrophic implosion.
During the hearing, the Coast Guard released a new image revealing Titan's debris, including the tail cone, resting at the bottom of the ocean—a stark reminder of the voyage's tragic end.
The primary purpose of this hearing is not only to uncover the facts surrounding the implosion but also to make crucial recommendations to prevent such a tragedy from ever happening again, as emphasized by Jason Neubauer, chair of the Marine Board of Investigation.
In today's video, we'll delve deep into the detailed highlights of what was revealed during the hearing. We'll examine each piece of evidence and testimony presented, shedding light on the sequence of events that led to this devastating incident. Join us as we piece together the final moments of the Titan's voyage and explore the implications for deep-sea exploration moving forward
