Q&A with the set decorator, Katie Spencer, and production designer, Sarah Greenwood, who are nominated for Best Production Design for the new Winston Churchill film, "Darkest Hour," directed by Joe Wright.
The designed the bunker underneath the war room to be a warmer, but still claustrophobic, counterpoint to Hitler's bunker in the film "Downfall."
They used the real exterior of 10 Downing Street and were given permission to film inside the actual Houses of Parliament, and they did film some shots in the Great Hall, but they had to recreate the House of Commons because of a rule barring anyone but a sitting MP to sit in the actual chairs.
They recreated the interiors of 10 Downing Street in a derelict Georgian house in Yorkshire. They were given access to the real 10 Downing Street by David Cameron, who was prime minister at the time, but after scouting it, they discovered it was an "absolute dump." The problem is that each prime minister brings in their own posh furniture from their country houses, and they leave the rubbish when their term is up.
