Decoupage Wine Glasses:
This is one of the easiest DIYs I’ve ever done. If it wasn’t for the drying time in between, the whole process would take less than half an hour.
This is a really easy DIY to start your holiday season. So bring on the glasses, share a glass of wine with your friends and make some warm holiday memories.
1) What I Used:
I got a new pair of wine glasses for this DIY. I went through all my paper napkins and chose this one because it’s red and gold.. Christmas colours! And then some Mod Podge, a brush to apply it and a pair of scissors.
2) Plan Your Design:
I placed the glass on various parts of the napkin to figure out which part of the design I wanted on the glass. I finally decided to use the corner because I wanted a bit of both red and gold. Since I’m doing just a pair I decided to keep the same design on both bases. But if I was doing a set of 6 I would have used different parts of the napkin on each glass. That way each glass would be different and yet look part of a set.
3) Single Ply Napkin:
Then I separated the layers of the paper napkin so that I was left with a single ply napkin with the design printed.
4) Cut The Napkin:
I cut the napkin a little larger in size than the base of the glass.
5) Apply Mod Podge:
I placed the glass upside down and poured some Mod Podge on the base. The key word being some.. not too much!
And spread it evenly with a brush.
6) Stick the Paper Napkin:
Place the paper napkin, right side up, on a plastic sheet. Hold the wine glass by its stem and judge where you’re going to place it on the napkin, because once it sticks you can’t move it. If you try adjusting the napkin right or left it will just tear because now it’s single ply and extremely thin.
The first time I placed the glass on the napkin, I pressed the glass firmly onto it. As a result, the Mod Podge went through the napkin on to the plastic below and the paper got stuck to the plastic, and tore while I was trying to lift the glass. I had to wipe everything clean and start all over again.
So this is really important when you decoupage wine glasses. Once you’ve decided where you’re placing the glass on the napkin, touch the glass to the napkin and it will stick instantly to the base. Just touch and pick. Don’t press it. (Watch the video at the end of the post to see how I did it)
7) Cut the Extra Paper:
Let the glass dry first for about 20 to 30 minutes. Then cut off the extra paper around the edges.
8) Add another white layer:
The glass looked beautiful already when I placed it on a white surface. But the layer of paper napkin is so thin, that when I placed it on a darker table, I couldn’t see the design on the base. Can you see the difference in this pic? The glass on the right has only 1 layer of paper so the dark table shows through.
I took a plain white paper napkin and made it single ply like in step 3. I put another layer of Mod Podge on the base and now stuck the second layer of paper to it exactly like I had done the first.
9) Repeat a Few Times:
Let it dry, trim off the edge and then repeat the Mod Podge a few times to seal it in properly. Let it dry between each layer and then trim closer to the glass, so that you can’t see the edges of the paper outside the glass like you can in the pic above. Isn’t the transformation amazing?
10) Time For Some Wine!
That’s it.. my decoupage wine glasses are ready.
