The Tinoco tunnel is located about 15 kilometers from the city of San José de Maipo in the Andes. It is a magnificent work of engineering carved in rock and has a length of more than 600 meters. It corresponds to a construction made for the transit of the Puente Alto - El Volcán railroad line, which ceased operations in 1985. Today it is abandoned, but its charm attracts numerous visitors and hikers.
We want to use this structure to test the RIEGL VZ-400i (3D terrestrial laser scanner with 800 meters range) and take measurements inside and outside the tunnel, to prove its versatility and especially the performance in confined spaces.
The point cloud shows the smallest details inside and outside the tunnel. The measurement of 66 scan positions took us 1 hour 50 minutes, obtaining 799 million measuring points. The RIEGL point cloud comes standard with many additional attributes: reflectance, intensity, pulse shape deviation, multiple targets per laser shot, color, etc.
