Galen Rupp of Oregon had already made his first U.S. Olympic team by the time he embarked on an historic senior year of college, where he won the NCAA cross country title along with Indoor and Outdoor titles and ultimately became the first male recipient of the Bowerman Award (in 2009). Rupp, who was second in a sprint to Liberty's Josh McDougal in 2007, was in a similar situation in 2008 against Liberty's Sam Chelanga, but had the kick to win the race. Oregon won its second consecutive team title with a lineup that included fellow (current and future) Olympians Andrew Wheating and Matthew Centrowitz. The Washington women won their first NCAA team title as well and Sally Kipyego of Texas Tech added to her incredible collegiate legacy.
