Hajj Stampede Aftermath
Crown Prince Mohammed bin Nayef has ordered an investigation after at least 717 people died in a stampede during the Hajj pilgrimage near Mecca. The accident on Thursday was the worst to occur there in 25 years, but earlier this month a crane collapsed at Mecca’s Grand Mosque. It killed more than 100 people and injured 400.
‘Assad Could be Part of Transition’
President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has for the first time said Syrian President Bashar al Assad could possibly take part in a political transition in Syria. But Erdogan also said Syrians would never accept Assad as their permanent leader because of his role in the country’s war. The conflict in Syria has gone on for more than four years. It’s killed at least 240 thousand people and displaced 11.7 million others. The UN says that Turkey hosts more than 2 million Syrian refugees.
Xi to Announce Carbon Caps
Chinese President Xi Jinping is in Washington DC on his first state visit to the US. He’s expected to announce a so-called ‘cap-and-trade’ programme to limit China’s carbon emissions. Last year, US President Barack Obama set a goal to reduce levels in the US by 26 to 28 percent within 10 years. Together, the countries are responsible for about 45 percent of the world’s carbon dioxide emission. While Xi and Obama have agreed to tackle climate change, the US accuses the Chinese government of not doing enough to help it fight cybercrime. But Xi says his country does defend cyber security.
Face Veil Ban Dominates Election Debate
A woman’s right to wear a face veil became the main topic in an election debate on Thursday. Last week, the Federal Court of Appeal struck down a ban on wearing a face veil during citizenship ceremonies. Prime Minister Stephen Harper called face veils ‘anti-woman’ and said he’d appeal the decision to the Supreme Court if re-elected. Green Party leader Elizabeth May called the discussion a false debate intended to distract Canadian voters.
