Background and history:
The subject matter and the style clearly show that it was sent down in the period when although the Holy Prophet's invitation was being resisted and opposed with denial and ridicule and false accusations stubbornly, persecution had not yet started. Therefore, this Surah also seems to have been revealed in the same period in which the Surah Qaf was revealed.
The Surah primarily focuses on the concept of the Hereafter and concludes by inviting individuals to embrace the belief in Tauhid (the oneness of Allah). It also serves as a warning, highlighting the disastrous consequences faced by nations in the past who refused to accept the message of the Prophets and persisted in their ignorant beliefs and ideologies.
Regarding the Hereafter, this Surah succinctly presents the idea that the diverse and conflicting beliefs held by people about the end of human life are indicative of their lack of knowledge. Each person forms their own ideology based on speculation, without a factual foundation. Some reject the notion of life after death, while others believe in reincarnation or an afterlife with rewards and punishments, but invent various mechanisms to evade accountability. It is immensely foolish to build an ideology on mere conjecture when addressing a matter as vital and fundamental as the Hereafter. Such an approach would lead to grave misunderstandings, a wasted and misguided life, and an ill-prepared future after death. The only way to form a correct opinion on this crucial matter is to contemplate the knowledge about the Hereafter conveyed by the Prophet of Allah and carefully examine the system of the earth, heavens, and one's own existence. One must ascertain whether the evidence for this knowledge's accuracy is present in the surrounding environment. The Surah presents evidence from the arrangement of wind and rain, the structure of the earth, the diverse creatures inhabiting it, human beings themselves, and the presence of pairs in the creation of the heavens and everything in the world. Additionally, historical instances are cited to demonstrate that the grand design of the Universe necessitates the operation of the law of retribution.
Subsequently, the Surah briefly extends an invitation to embrace Tauhid. It asserts that individuals were not created by their Creator to serve others, but rather for His own service. Allah is unlike false gods that depend on humans for sustenance and whose godhood is contingent upon human assistance. Instead, Allah is the Sustainer of all, independent of any external support, and His godhood operates through His own power and might.
In this context, the Surah also emphasizes that whenever the Prophets of Allah faced opposition and resistance, it was not based on rational grounds, but rather rooted in obstinacy, stubbornness, and false pride. This is the same basis on which the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) encounters opposition. Rebellion and arrogance are the only motives behind such resistance. The Holy Prophet is instructed not to be concerned with the rebels but to continue fulfilling his mission of invitation and admonition, as it is beneficial for the believers even if it does not resonate with others. As for the wicked individuals who persist in their rebellion, they should be aware that their predecessors who followed similar paths have already faced punishment, and a similar fate awaits them.
