Feather duster or fan worms (Sabellastarte spp.) are a real example of beauty and the beast. Behind the beautiful and graceful feeding/breathing apparatus, lives a polychaete worm in a tube made of mucous and detritus.
As filter feeders, these worms feed on phytoplankton and this can be provided for captive animals, which can go a bit hungry in modern reef tanks with good low nutrients and efficient filtration. The feather duster part is a combination of net and gill, taking food and oxygen from the current and being rapidly withdrawn to the safety of the tube at perceived threats. Occasionally this apparatus is shed and can be regrown by a healthy worm. Rarely, the animal will lose its tube and can rebuild one (or extend an existing tube) using substrate.
Feather dusters add grace to suitable reef aquaria, bringing an option for areas where light and flow may be unsuitable for many corals. Just make sure they are offered a plankton substitute where necessary - a member of staff should be able to guide you through your options.
