I recently stumbled upon a video discussing the controversial practice of buying backlinks, despite Google’s strict guidelines against it. It raised some thought-provoking questions, and I thought it would be interesting to share my thoughts on this topic.
So, let’s dive into the world of backlinks and the “ethical” dilemma surrounding their purchase.
The Backlink Debate: To Buy or Not to Buy
The video I watched was based on an article from Search Engine Roundtable, which highlighted a poll from Ahrefs. The poll asked SEO professionals whether they would pay for links in 2022.
The results showed that almost half of them planned to buy and pay for links in 2022, despite Google’s Webmaster Guidelines clearly stating that buying or selling to pass PageRank is a violation and can negatively impact a site’s ranking in search results.
Poll Results and the SEO Community’s Perspective
The poll garnered over 3,000 votes, with 53% of respondents saying they would not pay for links in 2022, while 47% admitted they would. This revelation raises questions about the effectiveness of Google’s guidelines and the practicality of SEO professionals adhering to them.
In the comments section of the video, many viewers pointed out that backlinks are still the backbone of Google’s algorithm and that there are proper and improper ways to acquire them. One comment mentioned the difficulty of ranking in a highly competitive niche without any backlinks, suggesting that purchasing them might be a necessary evil.
The Relevance Factor and Quality Backlinks
Another interesting point raised by commenters was the concept of relevance. Acquiring relevant backlinks from websites in the same niche can be more valuable than a large number of unrelated, spammy backlinks. As such, it’s essential for SEO professionals to prioritize relevance when considering backlink acquisition, whether through organic outreach or paid methods.
