In June 1940, the Baltic States - Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia - were incorporated into the Soviet Union. During the years of Soviet occupation, a number of mass deportations took place. From 1941 until 1949 over 200,00 civilians from the Baltic States were deported to distant regions in the Soviet Union.
