The cold air spreading up the South Island today began its journey down near Antarctica about 3 days ago, and brings the risk of heavy snow around Southland today (Monday) with many of the alpine passes seeing some snow showers.
On Tuesday the weather begins to settle down, but a breezy southwest wind flow remains around the country. Showers will turn up in regions exposed to the southwest winds.
High pressure takes charge on Wednesday meaning a mostly settled day around the country, but it's short lived as an active rainband moves onto the West Coast of the South Island on Thursday and looks to bring our next bout of severe weather.
