J.W. Gamble is a prison inmate in Texas who suffered a back injury while working in a textile mill. He was denied adequate medical treatment for his injury and suffered from other health issues like high blood pressure and heart disease. Despite his complaints, he was put in solitary confinement without medical care. Gamble filed a civil rights case against three officials from the Texas Department of Corrections but was denied a lawyer and his request for injunction and damages. The case was sent back to the lower court for further action, and the court found that the lower court's decision to dismiss the injunction and damages was incorrect.
