Once upon a time, I was terrified of color. Seriously—just the idea of using unconventional palettes gave me nightmares. 😅 But over the years, I’ve realized something important: color doesn’t have to be scary!
Here’s how I approach it step-by-step:
1️⃣ Start with a Non-Destructive Workflow
Keep your background, character, and lighting layers separate. Why? This way, you can tweak your colors endlessly without messing up your entire illustration. Experimentation made easy!
2️⃣ Simplify Your Color Choices
Don’t overthink it! Here are my go-to palette strategies:
🎨 Monochromatic: Safe but can be a bit plain.
🎨 Analogous: Colors that are close together on the wheel (think cozy and harmonious).
🎨 Complementary: The MVP of palettes! A bold background paired with complementary lighting on your character = chef’s kiss.
💡 Pro Tip: Keep your palette simple—like a background in one main color and lighting in its complement. Trust me, it works every time.
