A functional and productive space to get work done and spend quality time with family is how Jordy Stolk of Stolk Farms at Purple Springs, Alberta, describes what his family wanted to accomplish when they started building their farm shop in 2021.
The farm, which produces potatoes and rotational grain crops, was established in 1979 and had been utilizing several small shops to service the operation. Jordy says the time had come to pool their ideas and build the shop they needed. On this episode of RealAg Shops, he takes us for a tour of the 80x140-foot facility.
The first feature on Stolk's want list was lots of access points to pull in and work around equipment. The facility features a series of 18'x18' and 20'x20' doors as well as a big door for larger implements, including harvesters, air seeders and sprayers. There's also a drive-through wash bay for easy cleaning of trucks and equipment.
Another key feature is an overhead 5 ton crane that is used daily for a range of tasks — it really helps to move things around the shop and save the back, says Stolk. There's also a vehicle hoist with a separate entrance and a dedicated storage room to organize and find parts and supplies when they're needed.
Stolk says the well-organized shop helps them double or even triple productivity and get things done. That gives the family more time to enjoy the comforts of the shop's customized family and recreation rooms.
