One of the most fascinating experiences of my musical life over the past several decades has been witnessing the rediscovery of Alkan's extraordinary, hyper-romantic piano works--among of the monuments of mid nineteenth-century keyboard virtuosity. Thanks to pianists Ronald Smith and Marc-André Hamelin, not only has Alkan returned to the repertoire, but the definition of accomplished pianism has been effectively redefined.
