Window cleaning tips discusses what hard and soft rubber is for. Hard rubber is used mainly when temperatures get very high. Soft rubber tends to "cling" to the glass too much in these conditions whereas hard will cope much better. In temperate climates it is possible to use soft rubber all the year round except in exceptional weather. Having said all that, some people swear by hard rubber all the time. The thing to do is experiment but don't compromise on rubber. It's expendable so don't try to save money by using worn out rubber.
