Pope Francis reportedly informed Vatican dicastery prefects that he saw no justification for the Vatican’s ongoing financial support of U.S. Cardinal Raymond L. Burke. Multiple sources have confirmed that the Pope questioned the necessity of providing Cardinal Burke with a monthly salary and a complimentary apartment in Rome.
According to an individual who spoke with Pope Francis and later shared details with Catholic News Service, the Pope expressed his reluctance to continue subsidizing Cardinal Burke, especially considering the cardinal’s critiques of the Pope and the Church. The Pope allegedly remarked that Cardinal Burke appeared to have sufficient financial resources from America.
On November 27, Riccardo Cascioli, director of the Italian Catholic publication La Nuova Bussola Quotidiana, reported that Pope Francis disclosed these decisions during a meeting on November 20 with the heads of the Roman Curia offices. Cascioli mentioned that the Pope referred to Cardinal Burke as “my enemy.”
