There are so many different reasons why a child might need to enter into psychotherapy. And I like people to remember that when a child is having some type of distressing issue, working with the family is the best way to get at that issue and come to some type of resolution. A child may need therapy for so many different things. Anything from having trouble in school, having difficulty sleeping or not gaining and maintaining friendships.
I do recognize, sometimes that parents are very apprehensive to bring their child into therapy. What you should know before you start therapy with your child is that a good helping professional, and a good counselor is someone who's warm and understanding and really does understand the nature of your problem. So when your child needs therapy, it's very important that you interview numerous different clinical professionals, and meet with them, and find one that's comfortable and is a good fit for your family.
When children need therapy, don't think of it as some type of daunting experience. It's very positive, and it will be very helpful to come to a resolution, and help your child and your overall family have a good sense of health and happiness.
